Job Title: NCAA Basketball Clock and Scoreboard Operator
Department: Athletics
Reports To: Assistant Athletic Director for Game Operations / Director of Athletics
FLSA Status: Part-Time / Seasonal / Hourly
Location: Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan
The NCAA Basketball Clock and Scoreboard Operator is responsible for the accurate and professional operation of the official game clock, shot clock, and scoreboard during Lake Superior State University home basketball contests. This position plays a critical role in the integrity and flow of competition by ensuring that all timing and scoring functions comply with NCAA and Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) rules and regulations.
The operator works closely with game officials, the official scorer, and athletics game management staff to deliver a seamless and professional game-day experience for student-athletes, coaches, officials, and fans.
Operate the official game clock, shot clock, and scoreboard during all home men’s and women’s basketball games in accordance with NCAA and GLIAC rules.
Monitor and maintain the accuracy of all displayed game information, including score, period, fouls, timeouts, and possession indicators.
Start and stop the clock as signaled by game officials and ensure precise timing of live play, stoppages, and intermissions.
Communicate effectively and professionally with game officials, the official scorer, and the score table crew throughout each contest.
Verify proper functionality of timing and scoring equipment prior to each game; promptly report any technical issues to game management.
Assist in pre-game testing of Daktronics timing and scoring systems to ensure readiness and accuracy.
Maintain awareness of game situations to anticipate clock operations and minimize errors.
Adhere to all university, NCAA, and GLIAC policies related to sportsmanship, fairness, and game operations.
Perform other duties as assigned to support the successful execution of athletic events.
Required:
General understanding of basketball rules, timing procedures, and game flow.
Strong attention to detail, focus, and situational awareness in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with officials and game staff.
Reliability, punctuality, and professionalism during all assigned events.
Preferred:
Previous experience operating a basketball game clock or scoreboard at the collegiate or high school level.
Familiarity with Daktronics scoring and timing systems.
Knowledge of NCAA basketball timing and scoring regulations.
Position is seasonal and event-based (November through March).
Evening and weekend availability required for all scheduled home contests.
Work is performed courtside in Bud Cooper Gymnasium amid high noise levels and crowd activity.
Hourly rate commensurate with experience.
