Job Summary/Basic Function:
Assist in the operation and administration of the Business Office. This position reports to the Controller/Director of Finance.
Oversee and coordinate the assigned accounting activities; prepare and post journals to record the financial activity of the University; allocate expenses and revenues; record changes in assets, liabilities and fund balances; review journals prepared by other staff members; post transactions to the various subsystems; reconcile system/subsystem clearing accounts to ensure data integrity; periodically review system records and detail records including cash transactions and correct as needed; provide assistance to students, other University personnel and third parties with questions and issues.
Prepare financial and analytical reports for business data analysis, periodic reports and monthly and/or annual financial reports; provide records of financial activities to authorized individuals who administer activities, departments, schools or grants; and assist in the preparation various financial reports and tax documents required by external Federal, State and private agencies of the University and submits them on a timely basis.
Ascertain that established University financial policies and procedures are being followed; evaluate present accounting and operational systems and recommend changes as needed; assist in creating procedures, processes and documents to support these as appropriate; implement changes in accounting policies, procedures and processes to reflect changes in the regulations, policies and procedures of the various Federal, State and professional bodies that impact the operations of the University business areas; and coordinate policy changes with appropriate impacted areas.
Develop or maintain in-depth knowledge of accounting technology solutions. Pursue solutions for incomplete or problem transactions and/or corrupted files as may arise in the course of daily operations.
Assist in developing and maintaining logical coding schemas to organize and track data and to chart or create the connections necessary to feed data between system modules/applications; review and/or assign coding to transactions. Assist in maintaining records of the assignment of cost center responsibility.
Coordinate the input of data into the system modules; create and communicate job processing schedules and due dates.
Assist in the direction of financial audits and provide recommendations for procedural improvements. Assist with periodic audit functions across campus; prepare schedules and analyses for any external or internal audits deemed necessary.
Create billings and customized communications as needed.
Maintain and/or coordinate records retention for the University’s financial records, including both paper documents and computer stored information or equivalents.
Perform other duties as assigned.
May supervise or assist in supervising student assistants. Interview, hire, train, assign and direct the work of, evaluate, and recommend student workers.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
A bachelor’s degree-major in accounting or finance.
Knowledge of governmental fund accounting.
Five or more years of experience in accounting work including both electronic data processing and spreadsheet applications.
Ability to work well with others and communicate effectively are required.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum qualifications plus a CPA or MBA.
Experience with university finance/accounting systems.
Experience with BANNER.

Adequate physical fitness to be able to sit and concentrate for long periods of time; use of fine motor skills to operate computer; problem solving ability; ability to understand and work with numbers; ability to see, hear and speak with or without the use of aids to perform normal office tasks.
