*Employs a variety of proactive patrol techniques and strategies to ensure the safety and security of all staff, faculty, students, visitors, property and assets. Acts as a key facilitator in promoting the department's client-centered public safety approach. Engages in formalized campus oriented problem-solving and crime prevention measures whenever possible.
*Provides a visible deterrence to crime, prohibited activities, or suspicious activities on campus property.
*Ability to train and educate customers, students and staff on appropriate practices, protocols and responses to various situations, policies and programs.
*Responds quickly and effectively to emergency and non-emergency situations occurring during shift. This includes the functional ability to quickly grasp various situations, develop rapport with people involved in the incident, understand when people are or are not processing information, and be supportive or directive as needed.
*Employs the Incident Command System (ICS) when addressing developing events. Conducts an initial assessment of the incident, determines appropriate course of action, and remedies the situation in accordance with established training/ standards.
*Acts as a first responder to all fire and life safety incidents. Provides initial assessment of the situation and makes determination of appropriate response. Initiates ICS protocols, and acts as interim Incident Commander until the situation is resolved and/or transfer of command. Secures affected areas pending the arrival of emergency services and controls access until relieved. Makes notifications to appropriate individuals. Files complete and accurate incident reports.
*Attend and successfully complete all assigned training including but not limited to workplace harassment, Hazardous Communication, CPR/AED/1st Aid, Bloodborne Pathogens, FEMA ICS 110, 200, 700 and 800 and HAZ-MAT awareness.
*Provide emergency medical treatment (to certification level) and complete accident/injury reports.
*Makes rounds of buildings, parking lot, and grounds; noting and reporting or correcting safety or security issues and opening and locking buildings as required.
*Issues tickets and/or warnings for violations of parking regulations. Issue permits as required. Assist with directing traffic for special events.
*Fire safety of campus including but not limited to fire extinguisher checks, fire alarms testing and monitoring, fire drills, and fire safety education.
*Ability to work indoors and outdoors, sometimes in extreme weather conditions and temperatures.
*Assist campus community with jumpstarting, vehicle unlocking and personal escorts to vehicles, classrooms, and dorms.
*Receive and dispatch telephone calls during non-business hours; operate radio equipment in compliance with FCC standards and respond to dispatches as required. Answer after-hours telephone calls directed to the Public Safety Office.
*Resolve problems that may arise concerning operation of the University such as calling out snow plow crews when necessary. Assist Housing and the Physical Plant offices in issuing keys and directing late guests when required; give information and directions to visitors as needed.
