Lake Superior State University (LSSU) is seeking a reliable, detail-oriented Human Resources Assistant to support the daily operations of our Human Resources Department. The Human Resources Assistant provides administrative and operational support to the HR Department, assisting with onboarding, employee records, data entry, and general HR processes to ensure efficient, accurate, and compliant services for the University community. This position also provides day-to-day guidance and informal mentorship to student employees working within the Human Resources office. While this role does not include supervisory responsibilities, the Human Resources Assistant supports student workers by answering questions, modeling professional workplace practices, and helping them build foundational administrative and customer service skills in a higher education environment.
Serve as a first point of contact for employees, supervisors, and applicants by responding to routine HR inquiries and directing questions appropriately
Assist with hiring processes, including preparation of hiring and onboarding paperwork
Maintain employee personnel files and HR records in accordance with University policy and confidentiality requirements
Enter and update employee information in HR systems
Provide support with benefits administration as needed
Prepare correspondence, forms, and basic reports
Support compliance efforts related to HR policies, audits, and record retention
Provide general administrative support to the HR team, including calendar coordination, filing, and special projects
Administrative or office support experience, preferably in HR, higher education, or a public-sector environment
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion
Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
Strong communication and customer service skills
Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Commitment to professionalism, equity, and service excellence
Experience working in a Human Resources office
Familiarity with higher education environments
Experience with Banner or HR applicant tracking systems
Ability to perform general office duties including prolonged sitting, standing, and occasional lifting up to 30 pounds
