Hatchery Technician
Lake Superior State University seeks a hatchery technician to support the Fish Hatchery at the Center for Freshwater Research and Education (CFRE). The position is part of a growing and innovative team with a mission to provide novel undergraduate training in fisheries and Great Lakes research and management.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Hatchery Technician’s role will include, but not be limited to:
- Conduct and oversee day-to-day operations at the CFRE Fish Hatchery, including annual netting, egg collection, disease testing, fish stocking, cleaning, and maintenance
- Work with the CFRE Coordinator of Operations to maintain the hatchery facilities and acquire needed equipment and supplies
- Work with the Assistant Director of Research to train and supervise student workers
- Provide tours of the hatchery as requested
- Assist with other CFRE needs upon request, including fundraising, supporting workshops and classes, etc.
- Conduct hatchery data entry and QC, and maintain detail records of activities
- Work with the Michigan DNR and MSU to ensure broodstock collection and fish health testing are completed annually
- Assist CFRE staff and community partners with organizing and conducting outreach events (e.g., St. Marys River Day) as needed
- Assist with report preparation as needed, including the CFRE Fish Hatchery Annual Report and stocking report to the MDNR
- Maintain the necessary collector’s permits from the Michigan DNR
- Other duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in aquaculture, fisheries management, or a related field
- At least 1 year of experience working in a fish hatchery
- Demonstrate the potential ability to perform essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description
- Demonstrated organizational skills
- Valid driver’s license
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- At least 2 years of experience working in a fish hatchery
- Demonstrated experience working with and supervising students
- Familiarity with rearing Atlantic salmon
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS
Must be able to lift 50 pounds on a periodic basis. Adequate health and fitness to maintain long hours and busy schedule and to travel, as required. Use of gross motor skills to perform supervisory and organizational duties; use of fine motor skills in operation of computer; ability to hear, see and speak clearly, with or without aids, to represent the University in public appearances, promotional and recruiting activities; full use of hands, arms, feet and legs to perform direct supervisory, recruitment and promotional activities; ability to work with numbers.
