Job Summary/Basic Function:
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Hall Coordinator Focus:
Create and promote an atmosphere conducive of academic pursuits (peer mentor) and to personal student development by advising, disciplining, and counseling individual students, making referrals when needed; developing effective student leadership for the residence hall.
Mediate student conflicts within residential environments utilizing student development theory.
Concentrate on retention of assigned area(s) (freshman experience).
Manage the day-to-day operations of the residence hall(s) by maintaining weekly office hours; maintain resident records; ensure maintenance issues are corrected; promote a secure environment; enforce university and department policies and regulations.
Perform regular inspections of areas supervised for facility and custodial concerns.
Coordinate and encourage proactive programming that encourages sense of belonging, academic success, emotional and social growth, personal wellness and community development, and personal development; participate in program evaluations.
Supervise and guide resident advisors and front desk staff.
Focus on leadership development within residence hall areas including residence hall government and programming council to aid in the sense of belonging of residents.
Create assessment practices for first-year areas.
Assist in Resident Advisor recruitment, selection, and training.
Participate in the after hours, on-call rotation responsible for all residence halls.
Maintain a visible presence in the residence halls through participation in residence functions, attendance at resident meetings, involvement in student programming, and frequent walk-throughs of the building(s).
First-year Experience Focus
Maintain a Residential First-Year Experience that creates a welcoming community for students in their transition to campus by engaging them in programs related to personal and academic growth, navigating campus resources, building meaningful connections with others, and prioritizing well-being.
Support and innovate the Residential First-Year Experience program that values diversity and inclusion and provides a supportive home for residents of all identities.
Collaborate with academic and University partners to create and sustain residential communities that foster student learning, development, and academic success for First-year students.
Collaborate with Laker Success to create a First-Year Experience (FYE) Student Advisory Council that is charged with providing feedback regarding transitional and academic support programs for First-year students.
Other Responsibilities
Incorporate the tenants of equity, inclusion, access, and educational justice in all areas of work.
Act as the First-year experience liaison between Housing & Residence Life and the Laker Success Program.
Assist Campus Life and Housing with campus-wide programming and other departmental projects.
Serve on relevant university committees.
Complete summer duties/projects.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) and a minimum of one (1) year prior experience in residential life and student affairs required.
Demonstrated leadership, crisis intervention training, program development skills, and committee involvement.
Ability to work within a team, motivate others, and work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and some holidays.
Possess effective communication skills (written and verbal), organizational skills, and human relation skills.
Exhibit proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Familiarity with social media platforms.
Candidates must have an understanding of student development theory, today’s First-year college student, and the ability to work successfully in a university environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's Degree in Student Personnel, Student Affairs, or Higher Education Administration, or related field.
Previous supervisory experience, experience serving First-year students or LLCs, and a demonstrated understanding of issues facing this segment of college students. Experience developing residence hall communities, providing educational and personal support for students through programming, responding to student concerns and behaviors, advising student groups, facility and administrative management, and participation in department initiatives and campus life is preferred. Experience participating on committees and/or working groups. Experience reporting and following-up on maintenance, safety, and security concerns of building facilities. Understanding of residential programming.
Physical Demands:
Adequate physical fitness to be able to sit and concentrate for long periods of time; use of fine motor skills to operate computer; ability to see, hear, and speak with or without the use of aids to perform normal office tasks; use of gross motor skills to perform supervisory and organizational duties; full use of arms, hands, legs and feet to allow completion of housing inspections on a timely basis.
Work Hours:
M-F, 8am - 5pm and some after hours response
